Listening to GregKH’s keynote from the recent Linux App Summit while I work this morning.

I’ve heard bits and pieces of this content before, but this is by far one of the most concise presentations of it in recent memory. The biggest takeaway? “Don’t break userspace - we want users to upgrade without worry”.

Definitely worth checking out, both for Linux fans, and even more importantly for software developers.

Has anyone here on Fosstodon gotten their hands on a Raspberry Pi 400 yet? I’ve been keeping an eye on U.S. purchasing options, but so far they’ve all either been out of stock, or are allowing pre-orders/backorders, but won’t be shipping for weeks. 🙁

Removing Google Analytics

Now that I’ve migrated from WordPress to Hugo, it’s time for Stage 2 of my website redesign. I’ve been wanting to move away from Google Analytics for a while due to the invasive nature of the data they collect, but I’ve never taken the time to set up an alternative. I’ve looked into Matomo in the past, and while it looks promising, at this stage I’d rather not set up a server to host it myself, nor am I prepared to pay for their hosted option. So, after checking that off the list, what other alternatives are left?

Migrating from WordPress to Hugo

2020-11-21 4 min read

A little under 3 years ago I wrote a post entitled Site Redesign and Migration, where I unveiled a full redesign of my website after having moved it off of the Squarespace. Three years before that I started my website on Squarespace, after considering a host of other alternatives. And now, after many months of consideration, and after reading many blogs about why one should or shouldn’t use a Static Site Generator (ex: “Why I Don’t Use a Static Site Generator” by Kev Quirk), I’ve opted to migrate my website from WordPress to Hugo.

I should note: what I’m looking for in an optimal Linux distro for this laptop is one that is relatively easy to use, and has the ability to install recent software releases easily if desired. I like Arch, and continue to use it with KDE on my main desktop. However, I don’t use my laptop as much, nor do I want to have to troubleshoot things if a new software release breaks expected behavior, if I can help it. I want to just grab it and go 🤷‍♂️

My Fedora install lasted all of a few hours. Didn’t like it. This morning, I’ve installed two different operating systems already. OpenSUSE looked promising, but the default install didn’t get my mouse/keyboard to work right under X. I don’t feel like troubleshooting, so… now I’m playing with a stock Ubuntu installation. So far, working pretty well. I’m normally a KDE fan, but I’ll give Gnome a go for a bit at least. 😃

I had some free time this weekend, so what did I do? Being me, I opted to move one of my laptops from Arch to Fedora, to see what the user experience is like.
