An Update to My Reading List

2023-08-27 2 min read

This afternoon I updated the format of my reading list. For those who haven’t looked at it before, I’ve kept a public list of the books that I’ve completed reading since around 2016. Originally, I modeled it heavily on a similar concept from essayist Jamie Todd Rubin, and included notations for the format I the book was in (e-book, physical book, or audiobook), if it was a reread, and whether I recommended the book or not.

Until today, I thought that more or less everyone/everything I cared about was on Mastodon now…

…everyone except the local National Weather Service, that is. And on a day full of tornado warnings, I want to see what they have to say. And they’re only on Twitter. 😞

Okay, I normally don’t really pay close attention to app update sizes…

… but why the HECK is the Microsoft Outlook for macOS update 974 MB, and the installed size over 2 GB? For comparison, Thunderbird is a 124 MB download, with a 362 MB installed size.

(For the record, I have it installed for work, not for personal use.)

I realized today that I’ve been enjoying the Ivory experience on my phone to such an extent that I’m only really viewing Mastodon in the browser once or twice a week now.

To put that in perspective, in the years that I’ve been on Mastodon, I’ve never stuck with an app for more than a few days, and have always just used the web client. Huge props to the team at Tapbots for their work so far!

… And I just got into the Ivory Desktop Beta! πŸŽ‰

Excited to be checking out Ivory! Pretty sure this is going to instantly become my go-to Mastodon client on iOS!

From Monique Judge, writing for The Verge:

In the beginning, there were blogs, and they were the original social web. We built community. We found our people. We wrote personally. We wrote frequently. We self-policed, and we linked to each other so that newbies could discover new and good blogs.

The best blogs gave us a glimpse into the life of someone we β€œknew” online. Good storytelling, coupled with a lively discussion afterward, kept us coming back for more day after day.

2022 Year in Review

2022-12-31 4 min read

It’s December 31st again! Every year, it seems like things move faster and faster. I could have sworn that it was just summer, but Christmas has already come and gone, and we’re almost to a new year! And that means, following a tradition I started in 2017, it’s time for my yearly review!

A brief note before I begin: instead of walking through the highlights of my year in sequence (as if on a timeline), I’ve decided this year to talk about some major changes I’ve made/implemented over the past year.
